Playtime 1 - Open String Gym
The Open E, B and G

Listen and Copy

Listen to the guitar E note phrases, and try to copy after each one. Firstly, clap back the phrases. The second time, play them back on the E string. Play the song at least 3 times. Remember to Walk your fingers!

E Note Blues

Remember the first verse of the Posture Song? . . .

"You sit right down with your back up straight, shuffle forward on the chair and put your left foot on the stool..."

Open Strings

An "open" string is a string which isn't pressed down by a left hand finger.

When pulled by the right hand fingers, it rings freely on its own.

Open strings are easy to play.

There are 6 open strings on the guitar.

The Right Hand

Remember the second verse of the Posture Song? . . .

The right hand thumb should rest on the thickest string.

Your right wrist should be raised into an arch shape so your fingers can "swing" freely onto the string.

Walking Fingers

Rest your right thumb on the thickest string. Your index (i) and middle (m) fingers should pull the strings, one after the other in a "walking" motion. Each finger should come to rest on the second string. This is called a Rest Stroke.

Try pulling the first string "E" with walking fingers. Keep a steady pulse.

Left Right March - Listen and Remember

Listen to Left Right March. Try to play along. Remember to Walk your fingers!
